Before You Start: What You Need

• A Windows PC running Windows 10 or Windows 11 (64-bit recommended). Office 2024 does not install on Windows 7 or 8.1.
• About 4 GB of free disk space and a stable internet connection.
• Your 25-character Office 2024 product key and the download link from your order email.
• Administrator rights on the PC.

Step 1: Uninstall Other Versions of Office

This is the step most people skip, and it causes most install errors. Office 2024 cannot be installed next to Microsoft 365 apps, Office 2021, 2019 or 2016 trials, or the "Office" app that came preinstalled on a new laptop.

1. Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
2. Search for "Office" and "Microsoft 365".
3. Uninstall every Office or Microsoft 365 entry, including language packs (for example "Microsoft 365 - fr-fr").
4. Finally, restart the PC.

If an old version refuses to uninstall, Microsoft's free Microsoft Support and Recovery Assistant (SaRA) includes an "Uninstall Office" option that removes it completely.

Step 2: Download the Office 2024 Installer

1. Open the order email and click the official Microsoft download link for your edition (Professional Plus or LTSC Standard).
2. Save the file. Depending on the edition, it is either a small setup program (.exe) that downloads Office during installation, or a disk image (.img/.iso).
3. If you received an .img or .iso file, double-click it: Windows opens it as a virtual drive.

IT administrators can also follow Microsoft's Office LTSC 2024 deployment guide. In any case, only use the link from your order email or from Microsoft. Installers from unknown sites are a common source of malware and modified, unactivatable Office builds.

Step 3: Run the Installation

1. Double-click Setup.exe (inside the virtual drive, if you opened an image).
2. Click Yes when Windows asks for permission.
3. Wait while Office downloads and installs. It usually takes 5 to 15 minutes, depending on your connection. Keep the PC online and do not close the window.
4. When you see "You're all set! Office is installed now", click Close.

You will find Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and the other apps in the Start menu. Office 2024 Professional Plus includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneNote and Access (Publisher is no longer part of Office 2024); LTSC Standard includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and OneNote.

Step 4: Activate Office 2024 With Your Product Key

1. Open Word (or any Office app) and create a blank document.
2. If an activation window appears, choose "Enter product key instead" or "I have a product key". Otherwise go to File → Account → Change Product Key.
3. Enter your 25-character key and click Activate Office (or Install).
4. Restart the Office app. File → Account should now show "Product Activated" under Product Information.

Alternative with commands: open Command Prompt as administrator and run (with your own key):

cd "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office16"
cscript ospp.vbs /inpkey:XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX
cscript ospp.vbs /act

The folder is still named Office16 for Office 2024; this is normal. If Office is the 32-bit version, use C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office16 instead.

Step 5: Check That Activation Worked

In the same administrator Command Prompt, run cscript ospp.vbs /dstatus. Look for:

• LICENSE NAME: Office 24, with your edition.
• LICENSE STATUS: ---LICENSED---. That means Office is fully activated.

If you see several licenses listed, for example a leftover trial or another version, uninstall that version or remove its key with cscript ospp.vbs /unpkey:XXXXX (the last 5 characters shown in the output).

Common Problems and How to Fix Them

"We can't install Office because another version is installed"

An older Office or Microsoft 365 install is still present. Go back to Step 1, remove it (use SaRA if needed), restart and run setup again.

Install stops at a percentage or shows error 30015, 30088 or similar

First, check your internet connection. Then temporarily pause VPN or antivirus web filtering, restart the PC and run setup again. Make sure you have at least 4 GB of free disk space.

The key is not accepted or activation fails

Check that you installed the same edition as your key: a Professional Plus key will not activate LTSC Standard, and the reverse. Our Office 2024 activation error guide covers the specific error messages and fixes.

Office keeps asking to sign in to Microsoft 365

Usually, that prompt comes from a leftover Microsoft 365 component. Uninstall all Microsoft 365 entries, restart, then open Office again and use File → Account → Change Product Key.
